Sublight Railgun & Kinetic Build: Piercing Lines Without Wasting Shots

Build railguns in Sublight around alignment, kinetic damage, range, crit, and turn speed while accounting for reduced damage on later pierces.

QUICK ANSWER

Railguns are strongest when you can align multiple targets without giving up first-hit damage. Build for kinetic damage, range, crit, and hull handling. Official 0.16.6 notes reduced damage on later pierces, so the correct goal is not “hit everything with full damage”; it is “make the first hit count while turning each shot into efficient lane pressure.”

The pierce rule that matters

Railguns were adjusted so later pierced targets take reduced damage. They still punch through hordes, but you should not evaluate a railgun as if every enemy in a line receives the same boss-level hit.

Ship handling matters

One official patch and several videos reinforce the importance of firing arcs. A railgun on a narrow forward mount can be excellent if the ship turns fast enough to line up targets. On a sluggish hull, the same weapon may spend too much time searching for a lane.

Sabre progression

Patch 0.17.5 added Tier 2 and Tier 3 progression to the Sabre railgun, the first built-in weapon to receive that style of mid-run upgrade. That makes railgun-specific progression worth watching closely in Early Access updates.
